Logwood is sourced from the heartwood of the Logwood tree, and is a natural source of deep sultry purples. It has moderate lightfastness, made greater by the addition of iron. Logwood is often used as the base dye for black, and in the 18th century, nearly all black clothing was dyed using logwood. It is a strong extract, 3-5% will give deep rich shades of purple.
